Escorted tours in Iceland: FAQs
Why choose an escorted tour in Iceland?
On our escorted tours in Iceland, you get to see the best of the country. Escorted by a guide who knows the country inside out, you learn about the history, culture and geology of this incredible island.
For the duration of your trip, your guide handles logistics and practicalities. So you can focus on relaxing, meeting new people and enjoying that incredible Icelandic scenery.
Our guides are also skilled at tracking down the northern lights. They’ll take you to places where the aurora is most likely to appear, sharing their knowledge of solar science along the way.
What’s included in an Iceland escorted tour?
Our Iceland escorted tours include:
- Airport transfers
- Accommodation
- Escorted bus tour with an English-speaking guide
- Half-board or full-board dining

What can I see and do on guided tours in Iceland?
On our guided tours in Iceland, you explore the Land of Ice and Fire alongside a knowledgeable local guide. Depending on the tour you choose, you can enjoy a selection of the following activities:
- Experience the thrill of climbing a volcano crater. Or descend deep underground into a glacier cave.
- Sample Icelandic cuisine. Try fresh seafood, cinnamon pastries, rhubarb cake and — if you dare — fermented shark.
- Explore Reykjavik, Iceland’s vibrant capital city. Then savour a complete change of pace at historic fishing villages out in the wilderness.
- Embark on exciting, aurora hunting adventures and get expert tips on how to photograph the northern lights.
- Immerse yourself in Iceland’s incredible scenery. Thundering waterfalls, fjords, glacial lagoons, black sand beaches and turf-roof houses.
- Unwind in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon. Or in the outdoor hot tub back at your hotel.
- Get to know the real Iceland on visits to the Lava and Volcano Museum, the Maritime Museum and the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft.
- Explore South Iceland and the Golden Circle. Or venture further north to the remote, untamed beauty of the Westfjords region.
How many people are there on your Iceland group trips?
We only run small group tours in Iceland. There are various group sizes, up to a maximum of 22 people.
If you’d prefer, we can arrange a bespoke trip. We plan private escorted tours for couples, families and groups of friends.
Will I definitely see the northern lights on my Iceland tour?
We can’t guarantee that you’ll see the northern lights on your escorted tour in Iceland. However, we do everything we can to maximise your chances of seeing the aurora borealis.
We stay at remote hotels, in places with very little light pollution. We provide aurora wake-up calls so you never sleep through the northern lights.
You’ll also venture out each evening with your northern lights guide. Our guides are skilled at tracking down clear, cloudless skies where the northern lights shine brightest.
When is the best time to book Iceland group trips?
If you want the best possible chance of seeing the northern lights, we recommend travelling to Iceland between September and early April. Autumn and winter days have more hours of darkness. This makes it much easier to catch a glimpse of the northern lights.

My daughter and I had an amazing time on our trip, we didn’t want it to end! Everything went according to plan, each excursion was well organized and everyone involved with each activity, as well as everyone at the lodge was kind, friendly, positive and happy, which makes such a difference to your whole experience. The food at The Abisko Mountain Lodge was also incredibly good. Our room was large, comfortable and well-furnished. The bathroom too was also spacious and well-equipped. The outdoor clothing provided was of very good quality which kept us warm, and the staff members are happy to change items if they are not quite the right size for you. This is my second trip with Weekend a la carte and I’m sure there will be more as I have complete trust in them. I highly recommend Aurora Nights, it was fabulous.
Thank you for arranging a fabulous holiday, we had a really enjoyable time and would love to return in the future. Hotel Ranga is a lovely place to stay and the owner greeted guests in the restaurant, which was an unexpected welcoming touch. We didn’t see the Northern Lights due to the weather and the trip to the Eyjafjallajokull glacier and volcano was substituted by an excursion to Thorsmork, also due to the weather, which we thoroughly enjoyed; the brochure description doesn’t do it justice. We found Iceland and the people there really charismatic. Although the wind and snow cut short the amount of travelling we could do, we still covered a reasonable amount of what we wanted to see and our appetites are whetted for a return, perhaps in Spring or Summer. We found a couple of great places to eat near the Hotel in Reykjavik. Messin does tasty fish dishes and the Icelandic Street Food restaurant was excellent, offering simple but hearty soups with refills included in the price – great value.
What a fantastic trip! I booked this for myself and my husband to celebrate my 40th birthday and it didn’t disappoint! Booking was simple and we were kept up to date with all the details from the office team in the UK.
From the moment we arrived at Kiruna airport all the staff we encountered were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. We opted for the upgraded room at the Abisko Mountain Lodge which I would highly recommend. The cold weather clothing which was supplied was fantastic and kept us really warm in the sub-zero temperatures. The dog sledging, snowmobiling and the Northern Lights photography were all superb and the staff leading the trips were really friendly and so knowledgeable. Even though we weren’t able to do the sky station trip because of the weather, there was a lovely alternative evening organised for us which included a traditional dinner and a walk to the lake where we were able to see the lights. The food at the lodge was also exceptional and showcased some lovely traditional dishes using Moose and Reindeer which were wonderful to try.
I would like to send a massive thank you to all the staff at The Abisko Mountain Lodge as well as the guides we used for our guided walks, dog sledging and snowmobiling. I’d highly recommend the trip, it was our first visit to Sweden and we would definitely return. Thanks again to everyone (including the huskies) who made it so memorable!
Overall very good. Staff excellent and helpful. Accomodation basic but was what we expected. Tour guides very good (nature walks, snow mobiles, dog sleighs). Sky station disappointing as we never got to go up due to the weather and this seem to be a recurring feature. The alternative walk at night and meal was a let down as a result.Overall would recommend to others.
A well organised trip which was tailored to our specific requests. The arrangements all ran perfectly and any queries prior to the holiday were handled very quickly and professionally. The standard of accommodation and organised tours was very high. I would use this company again and recommend them.
A fantastic short break which fulfilled all expectations. Well organised with a polished delivery, we could not have asked for more. The accommodation was perfect for us and the guides knowledgeable and helpful. Every day was packed with adventure, each lasting longer than scheduled but we were never rushed; the guides took pride in showing and explaining their beautiful country. We would certainly use Weekend a la carte again and recommend them to others.
We booked with Aurora for a short winter break to celebrate an event. We wanted something special and that’s what we got. Clear information was backed up with straightforward booking detail, and we had a super, holiday with no complications.
The holiday exceeded my expectations and I will use Aurora in the future. Thank you!
We have never before experienced such friendly and simultaneously professional service! Alex’s communication was super prompt, questions encouraged and welcomed and attended to with great care and detail. Everything was well organised and available on beautifully designed and very useful platforms. Our destination (Mattarahkka Northern Lights Lodge) was fabulous on so many different levels – exquisite views, friendly interactions from everyone on the team, great food, exciting activities, perfectly situated to see the northern lights (seen twice in 4 nights’ stay), a great fire place, and not to mention our fantastic guide Fabio. Their provision of winter kit (hats, down jacket, snow trousers, leather gloves and boots) offered everything we needed to be comfortable outside. All we needed to have packed really were base layers, a few layers of clothing and woollen socks. Defintely somewhere we would highly recommend and return to when possible!
