Used exclusively by our clients, the lodge is situated on a slight elevation allowing views across the Arctic tundra to the Abisko Alps. This small, intimate lodge used to be a Sami handicraft centre until the owners had the idea to turn it into an exclusive retreat. With only seven bedrooms, open plan lounge and a dining room, the emphasis is on relaxing in a cosy environment.
You will be provided with arctic clothing for the duration of your stay at the lodge.
This evening, enjoy an exciting northern lights adventure looking out for the aurora and enjoying a two-course dinner.

You will head out on a snowmobile, where you will be taken above the tree line to the top of a perfect Lapland viewpoint. Here you will try out some traditional ice fishing while enjoying some coffee made over the crackling fire in preparation for some Swedish fika.
Back at the lodge, you will be served a two-course lunch from the local kitchen.
In the evening, enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot tub with 360° views for a great chance of seeing the Northern Lights before then enjoying a delicious three-course dinner!

After a relaxing morning at the lodge, you will be transferred to Arctic Gourmet Wilderness Cabins where you will be greeted by the owners, Johan and Marlin. This is the smallest restaurant in Sweden with just two tables with views over the river valley and a fitted kitchen where Johan will cook and serve your gourmet evening meal!
Check into your cabin where you will be based for the next couple of nights and enjoy some quality time exploring the surrounding area. The midway point of such an exciting and adventurous trip always needs a day of relaxation before more of the action begins.
You can sit outside around the campfire and soak up the silence of the Arctic night or jump in the outdoor hot tub and relax with the prospect of a Northern Lights display flashing above you.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
A Full Day of Huskies and Dog Sledding
After breakfast, you will be collected for your Husky Safari.
Ylva Forssén is one of a select group of accomplished female kennel owners and husky guides. Her kennel is in Moose Valley about a 30-40 minute drive away. Ylva runs a very personal dog sled experience and she has a very unique relationship with her dogs, making it always feel a privilege to spend time with her.
This premium husky tour has you learn how the dogs are trained with the help of mindfulness. Your trained guides will introduce you to the art of the ‘Trust Technique’. Afterwards, you will head out with your own team of dogs, before learning how to give the dogs a well-deserved massage to reward them for all their hard work.
This is a husky trip like no other and extremely popular!
In the afternoon you will be dropped back at Arctic Gourmet Wilderness Cabin for a well-deserved soak in the hot tub and a tasty three-course dinner.

Transfer to Abisko Mountain Lodge & Evening Aurora Photo Experience
Morning at leisure relaxing before you will be transferred to Abisko, one of the most celebrated locations on earth for seeing the Northern. Check into Abisko Mountain Lodge prior to partaking in their traditional Lappish menu which includes Reindeer, Arctic Char and Cloudberries – three of the unique ingredients to the area.
The only thing that can interrupt your evening is the Aurora Call. Abisko Mountain Lodge, owned by Mina and Dick Johansson, is in a fantastic location for northern lights viewing, so if they are out you may be tempted to step out the door and gaze skywards!
After dinner head out on the Ultimate Aurora Photo Adventure where you will discover THREE different ways to see the Northern Lights. Depending on the weather and aurora forecast you will hunt for the lights on foot, chase the lights in a modern 4×4, or ride on a cozy sleigh which is pulled behind a snowmobile to a wilderness camp in Abisko National Park.
You will be supplied with cameras pre-set for aurora photography and will head to the location where the guides think the best opportunity to see the lights is. Camps are set up in various locations but the most popular is the wooden hut out on the frozen expanse of Lake Tornetrask. To sustain you while you await the Northern Lights to appear, there will be hot drinks served around the fire.
Whether you are a pro or never taken a picture in your life, you have a great chance of going home after your Northern Lights holiday with some beautiful Aurora photographs and memories that will last a lifetime!
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Explore Abisko National Park and head out Northern Lights Chasing
Enjoy the lodge breakfast before getting the opportunity to explore Abisko National Park.

Your guide will meet you at the lodge and give you an easy walking tour of the lower part of the park. Be sure to take your camera to photograph some of the spectacular views.
After collecting all of the guests for the evening adventure, your professional aurora chasing guide will use their collective experience combined with local weather and aurora forecasts to make the best possible decision about where to look for the Northern Lights. During your evening together you will travel up to 90 KM to one of several spectacular locations with a proven track record and very high likelihood of success.

Where You'll Stay
Máttaráhkká Northern Lights Lodge
We are proud to offer this small intimate lodge, run by one of our long standing partners, Andreas Mikko.
This 7 room intimate lodge is situated in a super location on a slight elevation with magnificent views across the arctic tundra to the Abisko alps. The emphasis at the lodge is on two elements, Sami culture and ensuring you have the best chance of seeing the northern lights.
This small intimate lodge used to be a Sami handicraft centre until the owners had the idea to turn it into an exclusive retreat. With only 7 bedrooms and an open plan lounge and dining room, the emphasis is on relaxing in a cosy environment. The rooms have a downstairs en-suite room with a staircase leading to a loft sitting room.
If you are a group of 8 or more friends or family traveling together and wish to have the lodge privately please let us know. This is a great way of celebrating a big birthday or wedding anniversary
The lodge has a fabulous sauna and a very unusual northern lights hot tub on the roof where you can star gaze or hunt for the Aurora. (This carries an extra charge).
Other benefits of a stay here mean that you can snowmobile straight from your doorstep into the Arctic wilderness.
Evenings are focused on good food, relaxation and the Northern Lights so if you are looking for a ‘home away from home’ experience then look no further.
The Original ICEHOTEL - Swedish Lapland
The Original ICEHOTEL is situated in Jukassjarvi Swedish Lapland and is a feat of engineering and artistic creation. We recommend staying in an Art Suite to appreciate the full ICEHOTEL experience and our itineraries feature these rooms as standard. They cost a little more but add hugely to your appreciation of this Once in a Lifetime experience.
The ICEHOTEL consists of 2 structures – the temporary hotel is rebuilt each year from blocks of ice harvested from the Torne river which runs adjacent to the IceHotel. These blocks are stored for the summer in a huge warehouse and as the late Autumn temperature in Jukkasjärvi drops below zero ice artists arrive from all over the world to build this magnificent creation. They build the 4 levels of rooms, the ice chapel and the ice bar. Their art is created with imagination and hard work, only to melt away under the unforgiving rays of the spring sun.
The new ICEHOTEL 365 is a permanent ICEHOTEL and a feat of engineering which offers visitors the chance of staying the whole year round. It houses both Art suites and the Deluxe Art Suites (which we offer as an upgrade) with their luxury en suite bathrooms. It is also home to the celebrated ICEBAR.
You have your own private locker room where you can change and leave your bags whilst having access to the adjacent service block where there are saunas, toilets and showers.
Wake up to a hot Lingonberry juice served in your room prior to the very substantial ICEHOTEL breakfast served in the main restaurant.
For Dinner the ICEHOTEL has 2 restaurants, one serving gourmet food, whilst the more informal Homestead restaurant serves hearty traditional food.
Abisko Mountain Lodge
Right in the small hamlet of Abisko, world renowned for the Northern Lights, lies a small welcoming Lodge run by our good friends Mina and Dick Johansson. Dick is one of the most qualified mountain guides in Sweden and looks after all the adventure whilst Mina can be described as a Skier, Creative CEO and ray of sunshine who lights up the Lodge.
Abisko Mountain Lodge offers genuine accommodation in an old-fashioned mountain hotel setting. The service is personal and the cuisine is centred on raw ingredients. It is accredited by the Sapmi Slow Food movement, an award which took 4 years to achieve. Chefs are dedicated slow-food addicts and produce wonderful nightly meals!
The 16 standard rooms in the low red ‘Swedish style house’ are all en-suite. Although basic they are warm and cosy. There are no televisions in the rooms as time is spent meeting guests around the bar or in the wonderful lounge area.
Additionally there are 4 new superior rooms added in early 2015. These four rooms are in a separate annexe and are used exclusively by Aurora nights.
Order a coffee or a glass of wine at the bar, read a magazine or spin a yarn about your arctic adventures and the magnificent aurora displays you have seen.
For those wanting to soothe the muscles there is a sauna.
Arctic Gourmet Wilderness Cabins
This is the inspiration of husband and wife team Johan and Malin who have developed a totally unique concept. They have 2 cosy wilderness cabins adjacent to the smallest restaurant in Sweden – where Johan acts as a private chef to our guests.
Arctic Gourmet Wilderness Cabins are new builds and combine wilderness with creature comforts not normally associated with a wilderness experience.
Situated in a picturesque valley they are perfectly placed for guests to combine both a northern lights and arctic adventure. For those of you that appreciate good food, meals prepared and served in the smallest restaurant in Sweden are a delight.
There are two cosy double bedded cabins with large glass windows facing north towards the northern lights horizon. Modern styling includes satellite TV!
There is an adjacent toilet and shower block and an outdoor hot tub which guests are invited to use.
After dinner sit around the outdoor fire, gaze at the stars and hopefully the aurora, enjoy a hot drink or a whisky and appreciate how special it is to own a piece of Lapland for moment in time!
Being away from it all in your own private space with the auroras roaring overhead is simply breath-taking and the perfect special occasion retreat!

This vacation has without without doubt, has been the best experience we have ever had. The organisation from the minute we landed in Kiruna until we departed at the close of our trip was second to none. The transition between hotels was always seamless and punctual. Everywhere we stayed was beautifully clean and the meals were top quality. Every driver was polite, entertaining and very knowledgeable, furnishing us with invaluable information about Sweden and the activities in which we were to participate. The snowmobiling was wonderful giving access via our guide, to stunning panoramic views of the mountain whilst viewing reindeer in their natural habitat.
Our guide demonstrated how to use the snowmobile safely he was pleasant and informative. When visiting the reindeer on the Sami reservation; we found the brother and sister team who hosted lovely. Again they were so hospitable and helpful and feeding the reindeer up close was a wonderful experience.
They provided additional activities for us to try and we were treated to a traditional Sami lunch in their hut. They provided us with invaluable information appertaining to their culture and caring for their reindeer. The reindeer were in superb condition and happy in their environment. Similarly, when out with the dog sleds the experience was magical. Two hours of beautiful scenery, and frozen lakes, finishing with a one-on-one experience massaging the dogs. Magic! We were so impressed with the care that was placed upon ensuring the dogs were comfortable, well-nourished and so loved by their owners/handlers.
Now to the photographic experience. A large group of us were treated to a demonstration of how to operate some serious camera equipment with tripod. Each of us was loaned the camera and given assistance setting up the camera on a frozen lake in preparation for the appearance of the Northern Lights. We were taken to this lake on large wooden sleighs pulled by a snowmobile. We cannot speak too highly of the two young men who accompanied us on this experience. They could not do enough for us. They were there to offer assistance with our cameras throughout the two-plus hours we were on this beautiful lake.
They advised where to position the camera and when the Lights appeared, what a performance. We had a two-hour display of this most breathtaking phenomenon. We were so fortunate to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime occurrence for which we are so grateful. We will never forget this memorable holiday and cannot thank you and everyone who assisted in making a lifetime dream come true. Karen & Andrew Adamson
Fantastic trip with great hosts & made even more special by seeing the Northern Lights twice!!
We did the aurora nights break and had a great time overall. Everything related to flights, hire car, and hotels ran smoothly. There were a few issues largely relating to the weather and driving conditions (we travelled in mid March), but what we did manage to do was amazing.
The blue lagoon was easy to access from the airport and was a brilliant experience. We booked the standard package and it came with a free drink and face mask. Facilities were clean and organised with free toiletries in the shower rooms, which helps if you’ve gone there straight from the airport.
The drive to Hotel Ranga afterwards was long but fine (check out the road on google streetview to know what to expect). The hotel and staff were great. We were limited to one option as vegetarians on the bar and a la carte menus, but the food was lovely and if you are a meat eater you will see options of unusual dishes like puffin and reindeer.
Our northern lights super jeep trip was cancelled on both nights due to a poor forecast, but we were lucky enough to get an aurora wake up call from Hotel Ranga the first night. We couldn’t use the hottubs as there are only a few and they were always taken in the limited time we spent at the hotel, so don’t go expecting to get lots of time in one and you won’t be disappointed. View them as an add on if you can time it right. We were travelling with an 11 year old, so we didn’t stay up really late. If you are a couple you probably have a better chance of getting one later on.
The glacier/volcano super jeep trip was outstanding. Our driver, Íbí was excellent. She went above and beyond and gave us such an awesome experience. We were also super lucky with the weather the first two days and had great views across Iceland.
The ice cave tour was also incredible and the guides running it were excellent. The group size was much bigger than expected (especially after the more exclusive volcano super jeep tour), but it was broken down into smaller groups that were managed well, with plenty of time factored in for photographs. There were several unexplained delays getting to the cave during the tour that meant we weren’t able to ‘mini tour’ the rest of the South Coast afterwards, so if you plan to do the ice cave don’t overplan for the afternoon as you may not have much time. Not a huge disappointment for us as we got to experience the cave, but I imagine someone who planned a full itinerary afterwards might be frustrated by the estamiated timings not always being right and subject to change with the weather (which was wicked that day).
Driving around Reykjavik was a horrible experience as we arrived around rush hour and weren’t prepared for all the traffic, having only experienced quiet roads along the south coast. It was difficult finding a parking space, so be prepared to drive around a little when you arrive. If you haven’t driven on the right before and are not a confident driver this could leave you feeling stressed. Again, check out the roads into Reykjavik on Google maps to get a sense of what awaits if you aren’t used to self-driving.
We didn’t get to tour the golden circle because of road conditions/ice/road closures, so we spent the day in Reykjavik instead. This turned out okay for us as we did some of the attractions (Lava Centre and Fly Over Iceland – both hughly recommended), but it ended up being an extra expense and we missed out on the golden attractions. Again, not a big issue if you are aware this could happen. The weather is so changeable that having a plan B is a good approach.
Weekend a la Carte sent us a text warning us about the bad weather conditions, which we’d already seen on the Safe Iceland app, but we were grateful for anyway. It was good to know they were looking out for us!
All in all, a remarkable trip, with some unique experiences. If you book this in the knowledge that nature will have her own way, and you may not see everything you want (especially in winter), you will have a great time. Ranga is definitely the best place to maximise your chances of seeing the lights.
We have never before experienced such friendly and simultaneously professional service! Alex’s communication was super prompt, questions encouraged and welcomed and attended to with great care and detail. Everything was well organised and available on beautifully designed and very useful platforms. Our destination (Mattarahkka Northern Lights Lodge) was fabulous on so many different levels – exquisite views, friendly interactions from everyone on the team, great food, exciting activities, perfectly situated to see the northern lights (seen twice in 4 nights’ stay), a great fire place, and not to mention our fantastic guide Fabio. Their provision of winter kit (hats, down jacket, snow trousers, leather gloves and boots) offered everything we needed to be comfortable outside. All we needed to have packed really were base layers, a few layers of clothing and woollen socks. Defintely somewhere we would highly recommend and return to when possible!
We had the most fabulous time and everything worked like clockwork. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and extremely competent. The food was excellent and the experiences, especially Husky Homes, were brilliant. We saw the aurora lights at the mountain top in Abisko where the photography tour will be an enduring memory of a wonderful time. I would very much recommend Weekend a la Carte as a proficient tour operator.
My daughter and I had an amazing time on our trip, we didn’t want it to end! Everything went according to plan, each excursion was well organized and everyone involved with each activity, as well as everyone at the lodge was kind, friendly, positive and happy, which makes such a difference to your whole experience. The food at The Abisko Mountain Lodge was also incredibly good. Our room was large, comfortable and well-furnished. The bathroom too was also spacious and well-equipped. The outdoor clothing provided was of very good quality which kept us warm, and the staff members are happy to change items if they are not quite the right size for you. This is my second trip with Weekend a la carte and I’m sure there will be more as I have complete trust in them. I highly recommend Aurora Nights, it was fabulous.
Overall very good. Staff excellent and helpful. Accomodation basic but was what we expected. Tour guides very good (nature walks, snow mobiles, dog sleighs). Sky station disappointing as we never got to go up due to the weather and this seem to be a recurring feature. The alternative walk at night and meal was a let down as a result.Overall would recommend to others.
I appreciate the fast response to my inquiries regarding my trip. It would take decision making faster on my part, and plan my itinerary and activities being offered by the company accordingly.
