Day 1

Arrival in the High Arctic

Your Arctic adventure begins with arrival in Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town. Surrounded by rugged mountains, glaciers and frozen wilderness, this remote settlement sits deep within the Svalbard archipelago, far above the Arctic Circle.

After your transfer from the airport, settle into the comfort of Funken Lodge, one of Svalbard’s most iconic hotels. Perched on a hillside overlooking Longyearbyen, the lodge combines contemporary Scandinavian design with spectacular Arctic views, creating the perfect base for the adventures ahead.

The Polar Night season transforms the landscape into a world of perpetual twilight and darkness, creating ideal conditions for Northern Lights viewing. With the sun remaining below the horizon, the sky takes on beautiful shades of deep blue and violet, while snow covered mountains glow beneath the Arctic light.

Spend the remainder of the day becoming acquainted with Longyearbyen. Explore the town’s colourful buildings, browse local shops or simply relax at the lodge while taking in the surrounding scenery. The unique atmosphere of life at the edge of the world quickly becomes apparent.

As darkness settles across the wilderness, your first evening offers the possibility of an unexpected Aurora sighting. In Svalbard, the Northern Lights can appear at any hour during the Polar Night, making every moment an opportunity to witness nature’s greatest spectacle.

Day 2

Northern Lights Snowcat Adventure

Wake to your first full day in Svalbard and enjoy breakfast overlooking the dramatic Arctic landscape. The day is yours to relax or explore Longyearbyen before this evening’s unforgettable adventure.

As darkness envelops the wilderness, board a specially adapted snowcat and journey beyond the town into the frozen valleys surrounding Longyearbyen. Travelling across pristine snow covered terrain, you’ll venture into areas inaccessible by conventional vehicles, far from artificial light and surrounded by complete Arctic silence.

The Polar Night creates exceptional conditions for aurora viewing. With darkness present throughout the day, opportunities to witness the Northern Lights are significantly increased compared with many other Arctic destinations. Your guide will share fascinating insights into local history, geology and the science behind the Aurora Borealis as you travel deeper into the wilderness.

Several stops are made along the route, allowing time to admire the landscape and watch the sky for signs of activity. If conditions are favourable, ribbons of green light may begin to dance overhead, illuminating the snowy valleys below.

The combination of remote Arctic scenery, endless darkness and the possibility of spectacular auroral displays creates an experience unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Return to Funken Lodge later this evening and relax after your first true taste of Svalbard’s wilderness.

Day 3

Camp Barentz and Arctic Traditions

Today offers free time to discover more of Longyearbyen before an authentic Arctic evening experience awaits.

As night falls, travel to Camp Barentz, located beyond the settlement in a secluded wilderness setting beneath the mountains. Named after Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz, the camp provides a fascinating insight into Arctic life and exploration.

Gather around a roaring fire inside a traditional cabin and enjoy stories about Svalbard’s history, wildlife and the challenges of living in one of the world’s most remote environments. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming and rich with local character.

Outside, the darkness of the Polar Night stretches across the landscape. With very little light pollution, Camp Barentz is an excellent location for watching the Northern Lights. Step outside periodically to scan the skies and absorb the remarkable stillness of the Arctic wilderness.

The experience offers a wonderful balance of cultural discovery and aurora viewing opportunities. Whether the Northern Lights appear as faint shimmering curtains or vibrant displays stretching across the heavens, the setting adds an extra layer of magic to the evening.

Following your time at Camp Barentz, return to Funken Lodge where panoramic views over Longyearbyen provide one final opportunity to look skyward before retiring for the night.

Day 4

Hiking to Platåfjellet and Dining at Huset

This morning, discover another side of Svalbard during a guided hike to Platåfjellet, the mountain plateau that rises above Longyearbyen.

Accompanied by an experienced guide, journey through the Arctic landscape while learning about the region’s geology, history and unique environment. Snow covered slopes and expansive views create a dramatic backdrop as you make your way through the wilderness.

The elevated vantage points reveal the scale of Svalbard’s extraordinary scenery. Mountains, glaciers and frozen valleys stretch towards the horizon, highlighting the vastness and isolation that make this destination so special.

Your guide will share stories about the area’s wildlife, exploration heritage and the delicate ecosystem that thrives in this challenging environment. Every step provides a deeper appreciation for the beauty and resilience of the High Arctic.

This evening, enjoy dinner at renowned Huset Restaurant, one of Svalbard’s most celebrated dining venues. Combining Nordic flavours with local ingredients and creative culinary techniques, the restaurant offers a memorable gastronomic experience that perfectly complements your Arctic adventure.

After dinner, return to Funken Lodge where the dark skies may once again reveal the elusive Aurora Borealis.

Day 5

Northern Lights Photography Adventure

Today is dedicated to one of the most sought after experiences in Svalbard, capturing the Northern Lights through the lens of your camera.

This evening, join an expert led photography excursion designed to maximise both viewing and photographic opportunities. Travelling away from Longyearbyen, your guide will select locations based on current weather and aurora forecasts to provide the best possible conditions.

Throughout the experience, you’ll receive practical advice on photographing the Northern Lights, from camera settings and composition to techniques for capturing movement and colour. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced photographer, expert guidance helps you make the most of the evening.

Beyond photography, the experience offers a deeper understanding of the Aurora Borealis and the environmental conditions that create these mesmerising displays. Standing beneath the vast Arctic sky, surrounded by snow covered wilderness, is an unforgettable experience in itself.

With darkness present throughout the day during the Polar Night, the potential for spectacular sightings is ever present. If conditions align, you may witness vibrant curtains of green, purple and white light dancing overhead.

Return to Funken Lodge with remarkable memories and photographs of one of nature’s most extraordinary phenomena.

Day 6

Dog Sledding and Arctic Fine Dining

Few Arctic experiences are as iconic as dog sledding, and today provides the opportunity to travel through the wilderness in true polar style.

Meet a team of enthusiastic huskies and learn about the traditions of sled dog travel before setting off across the frozen landscape. Guided by experienced mushers, journey through valleys and open terrain where silence is broken only by the sound of runners gliding across the snow.

The connection between dogs, musher and landscape creates an authentic Arctic experience that has changed little over generations. Surrounded by dramatic scenery and endless darkness, you’ll gain a unique perspective on life in the far north.

The afternoon offers time to relax and reflect on the adventures of the past week before enjoying a special farewell dinner at Funktionærmessen Restaurant. Known for its excellent cuisine and historic setting, the restaurant provides a fitting conclusion to your Svalbard journey.

Raise a glass to an unforgettable Arctic escape and one final evening beneath the Polar Night sky.

Day 7

Departure from Svalbard

Enjoy a final breakfast at Funken Lodge before transferring to the airport for your onward journey.

As you leave Svalbard behind, take with you memories of extraordinary landscapes, unforgettable Northern Lights experiences and adventures in one of the world’s most remote destinations. From snowcat safaris and dog sledding to mountain hikes and evenings spent beneath shimmering Arctic skies, this journey showcases the very best of the Polar Night season.

Few destinations offer such a remarkable combination of wilderness, comfort and natural wonder. Svalbard’s unique location beneath the auroral oval, combined with the magic of continuous darkness, creates a truly exceptional setting for a Northern Lights holiday.
