Begin in Oslo, where contemporary design, Norwegian culture and time to unwind set an easy pace for the journey ahead. From here we travel north to Lofoten, where mountains rise from the sea and fishing villages sit beneath wide Arctic skies. Our days are shaped by private guiding, local food, a cheese farm visit, sauna time and the possibility of the Northern Lights after dark.

We continue to Alta and the forest setting of Onga Boutique Lodge, slowing down among frozen rivers, reindeer, Sami traditions and the waters of Altafjord. There is time for snowshoeing, fireside flavours, a heated boat safari, Aurora walks and quiet evenings at the lodge. Finally, we return to Oslo for one last night at Sommerro House. Across ten days, the trip moves steadily north, balancing thoughtful adventure with space to slow down and look upwards as winter slowly settles across Norway around us.

The journey combines culture, food, winter landscapes and time outdoors. In Oslo, a private full day tour visits the Fram Museum, Norsk Folkemuseum and Hadeland Glassverk. Lofoten brings a private sightseeing day, a local cheese farm visit with tasting and workshop, a private sauna session and an evening Northern Lights quest. In Alta, walk across a frozen river, meet Sami hosts and reindeer, travel across Altafjord by heated boat and join the Arctic Spirit Ice, Fire and Flavour experience. Onga Boutique Lodge adds Aurora walks, sauna sessions, afternoon tea, fine dining and quiet time beneath the northern sky each evening.

Itinerary Inspiration

Day 1

Arriving in Oslo and Slowing Down

Your journey begins in Oslo, where a private premium transfer takes you from the airport to The Thief. The first afternoon is deliberately unhurried, giving you time to settle into your Superior Room and leave the journey behind before the days begin to fill with culture, winter landscapes and time outdoors.

Later, head to the hotel wellness area for a 90 minute session, followed by a Classic full body massage lasting around 50 minutes. It is a gentle start to the trip and a chance to slow the pace before travelling further north.

The Thief brings together contemporary art, Norwegian design and a calm waterfront setting. There is no need to go far this afternoon. Spend time around the hotel, rest after the flight or step outside for a first look at Oslo and the water nearby.

Dinner is at leisure this evening. A reservation can be arranged by the concierge team if you would like plans in place, or the evening can stay open until you decide what feels right after arrival.

Nothing more needs to be fitted into today. The point is simply to arrive well.

Over the coming days, Oslo will give way to the sharper mountains and fishing villages of Lofoten, then to the quieter forests and frozen landscapes around Alta. For now, there is time to enjoy a warm hotel, a slower evening and the first sense of being in Norway in late winter.

As darkness settles over the city, the journey north is still ahead. Tomorrow brings a full day exploring Norwegian history and culture, but tonight belongs to rest, good food if you want it and an easy first evening before the scenery begins to change.

Day 2

Polar Stories and Norwegian Traditions

After breakfast at The Thief, the day opens out into a broader look at Norway and the stories that have shaped it. A private guide leads an eight to nine hour tour through Oslo and beyond, combining polar history, traditional culture and Norwegian craftsmanship.

The first stop is the Fram Museum on the Bygdøy Peninsula. Step aboard Fram, the famous polar exploration ship, and explore exhibitions that reveal the ambition and endurance behind Norway’s expeditions into the Arctic and Antarctic. It is a fitting place to begin a journey that will soon take you much further north.

From there, continue to the Norsk Folkemuseum. Traditional wooden buildings, farmhouses and the preserved Gol Stave Church create a picture of Norwegian life across the centuries. The open air setting makes the visit feel less like a conventional museum and more like moving through different periods of the country’s past.

Later, leave Oslo behind for a while and travel through the countryside towards Hadeland Glassverk. Glass has been made here since the eighteenth century, and there is time to watch skilled glassblowers at work, explore the galleries and browse the shops.

Lunch is at leisure during the tour, allowing the day to keep a relaxed rhythm rather than feeling tightly scheduled.

By late afternoon, return to The Thief for the final evening in Oslo before the journey north begins properly. Dinner is at leisure, with a reservation available through the concierge team if preferred.

Today gives the trip some context. The landscapes ahead will be very different, but the themes begin here, exploration, craftsmanship, tradition and a close relationship with the north.

Back at the hotel, there is time to slow down again and enjoy one more night in the city before tomorrow’s flight to Lofoten.

Day 3

North to the Lofoten Islands

After breakfast at The Thief, a private premium transfer takes you back to Oslo Airport. Today the city falls away and the journey begins moving north towards Lofoten, where the landscape becomes steeper, quieter and increasingly shaped by sea and weather.

The suggested flight journey travels from Oslo to Leknes via Bodø. These domestic flights are not included, but the itinerary provides recommended connections for the journey north.

On arrival at Leknes Airport, a private transfer continues to Ballstad and Hattvika Lodge. The first views of Lofoten set the tone quickly. Mountains rise sharply from the coastline, fishing villages sit close to the water and the light seems to shift from one stretch of road to the next.

Hattvika Lodge is set in the working fishing village of Ballstad, with historic fishermen’s buildings and contemporary accommodation gathered beside the sea. Your Seaside Suite has a private hot tub, giving you a warm place to return to after time outside over the next few days.

There is no organised activity after arrival, which leaves space to settle in properly. Unpack, step outside around the harbour or simply stay close to the lodge and watch the afternoon fade into evening.

Dinner is reserved at Solsiden tonight.

This first night in Lofoten is more about arriving than exploring. There are three nights here, so there is time to let the islands unfold gradually rather than trying to take everything in at once.

As darkness settles around Ballstad, the sky starts to matter more. The Northern Lights are never guaranteed, but from this point in the trip every clear evening brings the possibility of seeing them.

For now, enjoy the quiet around the harbour, the warmth of the lodge and the feeling that the journey has moved somewhere noticeably further north.

Day 4

A Private Day Through Lofoten

After breakfast at Hattvika Lodge, meet your private guide and head out for a full day exploring Lofoten. Around seven to eight hours are set aside, but there is no fixed route that needs to be followed. The day can respond to the weather, the light and the places that feel most worth seeing.

That flexibility suits Lofoten. Conditions change quickly here, and some of the best moments come from taking a quieter road, following a break in the clouds or simply stopping when the view opens out across mountains and sea.

Depending on the day, the route might take in remote fjords, small fishing villages, wide beaches or local galleries. There is time to learn more about the people who live here and the way the islands have been shaped by fishing, weather and the sea. Just as importantly, there is space to pause without feeling the need to move on.

Lunch is at leisure during the tour, keeping the day relaxed and allowing the route to remain flexible.

By late afternoon, return to Ballstad and Hattvika Lodge. After several hours outside, the private hot tub is waiting, along with time to warm up and watch the last of the daylight settle across the harbour and surrounding mountains.

Dinner is reserved at Solsiden again this evening.

Today is less about ticking off landmarks and more about getting a sense of Lofoten as a place. Winter light, changing skies and the quiet between villages are as much a part of the experience as the stops themselves.

Back at the lodge, another northern evening begins. Tomorrow brings local food, sauna time and a dedicated Northern Lights quest, but tonight can stay simple.

Slow down, settle in and keep an eye on the sky as darkness gathers over Ballstad.

Day 5

Local Flavours and Northern Lights

After breakfast at Hattvika Lodge, head out with a private guide for a slower look at the landscapes and flavours of Vestvågøy. Today begins with a local food experience and ends beneath the Arctic night sky.

The first part of the day is a private visit to a local cheese farm, with around five hours set aside for the journey, tasting and workshop. Travel through open coastal scenery before arriving at the farm, where you can meet the goats, hear about the philosophy behind the food and see how fresh milk is turned into cheese.

A guided tasting introduces the flavours made here, followed by a simple seasonal lunch. There is also a hands on cheese making workshop, giving the visit a practical side and a closer connection to everyday life in Lofoten.

Later, the pace slows again with a private sauna session lasting around two hours. As afternoon begins to fade, there may already be a chance to see the Northern Lights if the sky is clear.

Dinner is reserved at FANGST this evening.

Afterwards, head outside for a private Northern Lights Quest lasting around three hours. Your guide follows the weather and cloud cover, choosing viewing locations according to the conditions. Areas such as Ballstad, Hauklandstrand and Uttakleiv may be considered, with beaches, mountains and open horizons creating striking settings if the Aurora appears.

There are no guarantees, so part of the experience is simply being outside in the dark, watching and waiting.

Later, return to Hattvika Lodge and your Seaside Suite. It is the final night in Lofoten, with time for one last look at the sky from the private hot tub before tomorrow’s journey continues north to Alta.

The day has moved from farm and table to heat, darkness and open sky, all within one island landscape.

Day 6

From Lofoten to the Forests of Alta

Breakfast at Hattvika Lodge is followed by a quieter morning in Lofoten. There is time to pack, take a final look around and browse for souvenirs in Svolvær before leaving the islands behind.

Later, travel to Leknes Airport for the suggested flight journey to Alta via Tromsø. These domestic flights are not included, but the recommended connections keep the route north straightforward.

On arrival in Alta, a private transfer takes you away from the airport and into Mathisdalen. The landscape changes again. After the exposed coastline of Lofoten, the road leads into forest, with mountains beyond the trees and very little artificial light.

Onga Boutique Lodge is your base for the next three nights. Small, quiet and surrounded by nature, the lodge is designed around a slower way of experiencing the Arctic. Settle into a Deluxe Queen Room, where natural materials and a private fireplace create a warm place to return to after time outside.

A three course dinner is included at the lodge this evening.

During the stay, there is also access to Onga Serenity Sessions. The wellness area includes a shared wood fired sauna and an outdoor hot tub, with session times arranged at the lodge. Towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided.

There is no fixed Northern Lights excursion tonight, but this is a place where the sky is never far from attention. With minimal light pollution around the lodge, a clear evening may be reason enough to step outside.

For the next few days, the rhythm changes once more. Frozen rivers, reindeer, local food, forest and long northern evenings take over from the mountains and sea of Lofoten.

Tonight is simply about settling in, enjoying dinner and letting the quiet of Alta take over. Tomorrow the winter experiences begin properly, but for now there is warmth, forest and the possibility of an Aurora overhead

Day 7

Frozen Rivers, Reindeer and Aurora Skies

After breakfast at Onga Boutique Lodge, head out into the valley for a shared Frozen River Walk. The experience lasts between two and four hours and takes you through snow covered forest before stepping onto the shallow frozen river itself.

Snowshoes help with moving across the winter landscape, while the route can be adjusted to suit conditions and the comfort of the group. A safety briefing is included before setting out, with warm drinks and snacks along the way.

There is something very simple about this morning. Snow underfoot, muted winter colours and long stretches of quiet make the walk feel more about being in the landscape than reaching a particular destination.

Return to Onga Boutique Lodge for a two course lunch before a private transfer takes you to Sami Siida.

Here, spend around an hour and a half learning more about Sami life and traditions. Travel by reindeer sled along the frozen Alta River, then gather around a fire for stories, Sami Joik, a warm drink and snacks. It is a calm and personal experience, shaped as much by the setting as by the activity itself.

A private transfer returns you to the lodge for a three course dinner.

Later, join the Onga Daily Aurora Walk. The timing changes according to the weather and sky conditions, giving the best chance of heading outside when the night looks promising. The walk lasts around 30 to 60 minutes, with snowshoes provided if needed.

There is also time for an Onga Serenity Session, with access to the shared wood fired sauna and outdoor hot tub.

From the frozen river to reindeer and the night sky, today brings together several sides of winter in Alta without feeling rushed.

By evening, the forest is quiet again, dinner is finished and only the weather decides whether the Northern Lights become part of the night.

Day 8

Altafjord, Firelight and a Night Beneath the Sky

After breakfast at Onga Boutique Lodge, a private transfer takes you to the harbour for a shared Arctic Fjord Safari on Altafjord. The trip lasts around two and a half hours and takes place aboard a heated boat, keeping the journey comfortable while the fjord opens out around you.

From the water, Alta feels different again. Mountains rise around the fjord, winter light moves across the surface and there is time to watch for local wildlife, including seabirds and dolphins. Your guide also shares stories about Finnmark, its history, culture and geography as you travel.

After the safari, a private transfer returns you to Onga Boutique Lodge for a two course lunch.

The afternoon brings the shared Arctic Spirit Ice, Fire and Flavour experience. Begin with a short snowshoe walk into the winter landscape before gathering beside a fire near the frozen river. Here, watch ice being cut, taste selected Norwegian spirits and listen to local stories that connect the experience back to life in the Arctic.

Later, return to the lodge for Afternoon Tea, Onga Way, with homemade pie before sitting down to a five course dinner.

Tonight, the itinerary also notes an additional overnight in a Private Aurora Dome in the forest close to the lodge. The dome has a queen sized bed, chairs, a fireplace and slippers, with open views of the sky. There are no curtains, toilet or running water, so the Deluxe Queen Room remains available nearby for facilities.

It is the final night in Alta, and the dome gives you one last reason to keep looking upwards. If the skies clear, the Aurora may appear overhead.

If they stay quiet, the forest, firelight and deep Arctic darkness still make this a memorable place to spend the night.

Day 9

South Again to Oslo

After breakfast at Onga Boutique Lodge, begin the journey south again. A private transfer takes you from Mathisdalen to Alta Airport for the suggested flight journey back to Oslo via Tromsø. These domestic flights are not included in the itinerary.

Leaving Alta feels like a noticeable shift. For the past few days, life has been shaped by forest, frozen rivers, reindeer, fires and long winter evenings. Now the stillness of the north gives way to the city again.

On arrival at Oslo Airport, a private premium transfer takes you to Sommerro House for the final night in Norway.

Check into a Deluxe Room, where the design draws on the feel of an elegant 1930s townhouse. Norwegian details, curved lines, polished birch and Art Deco influences create a very different atmosphere from the lodges further north, while still keeping a strong sense of place.

There are no organised activities this evening.

Dinner is at leisure, with the option to have a reservation arranged in advance by the concierge team. Head out into Oslo for one final meal or keep things simple and stay close to the hotel.

It is a quiet end to a journey that has moved steadily north and then back again. Oslo came first, followed by the mountains and fishing villages of Lofoten, then the forests and frozen landscapes around Alta.

Tonight, you are back where the trip began, but with a very different picture of Norway.

There is time to slow down, unpack only what is needed and enjoy one final city evening before tomorrow’s departure. The Arctic part of the journey may be behind you, but the memories are still close, dark skies over Lofoten, the quiet river in Alta and the warmth of the lodge after long hours outside in winter.

Day 10

One Last Morning in Norway

Breakfast at Sommerro House marks the final morning in Norway. There are no activities to fit in today, so the departure remains simple and unhurried.

At the arranged time, a private premium transfer takes you back to Oslo Airport for the journey home.

Over the past ten days, the scenery has changed steadily. Oslo introduced Norwegian design, culture and polar history before the route moved north to Lofoten, where mountains, fishing villages and dark Arctic evenings shaped the days.

From there, the journey continued to Alta and the forest around Onga Boutique Lodge. Frozen rivers, reindeer, Sami traditions, Altafjord, fireside flavours and time beneath the northern sky brought a quieter rhythm to the second half of the trip.

Some experiences were carefully planned. Others depended on the weather and the light.

That is part of travelling north in winter. The places, guides and activities can be chosen, but the Northern Lights arrive on their own terms. Each clear evening carries a little anticipation, whether the Aurora appears quickly or the night simply brings stars, snow and the silence of the Arctic.

Now the bags are packed and the route turns home.

There is nothing more that needs to be added to the morning. Enjoy breakfast, take one final look at Oslo and settle into the private transfer back to the airport.

The journey leaves behind a collection of very different memories, from the waterfront in Oslo to the mountains of Lofoten and the forest in Alta. There has been time for culture, local food, winter adventure and quiet evenings spent looking upwards.

The northern nights are behind you now, but the sense of space, stillness and changing winter light is likely to stay long after the journey ends.

It is a simple ending to a journey that has travelled a long way north.
