Itinerary Inspiration

Day 1

Arrival in Elegant Oslo

Your Arctic adventure begins in Norway’s stylish capital, where contemporary Scandinavian design meets centuries of royal history. On arrival at Oslo Gardermoen Airport, you’ll be welcomed by your private driver and transferred into the heart of the city, allowing you to settle effortlessly into the elegant Hotel Continental, one of Oslo’s most celebrated luxury hotels.

Perfectly positioned beside the National Theatre and only a short stroll from the Royal Palace, Aker Brygge and Karl Johans gate, the hotel provides an ideal introduction to Norway. Behind its historic façade you’ll discover beautifully designed rooms, exceptional service and a peaceful atmosphere after your journey north.

The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace. Wander through Oslo’s waterfront districts, admire the striking architecture of the Opera House or browse independent boutiques and galleries that showcase the very best of modern Nordic design. If time allows, visit one of the city’s excellent museums or simply relax with a coffee while watching everyday life unfold.

As evening arrives, Oslo’s renowned dining scene offers the perfect welcome to Scandinavia. Whether you choose an intimate neighbourhood restaurant or a refined Michelin recommended dining experience, you’ll quickly appreciate Norway’s passion for seasonal ingredients, fresh seafood and beautifully prepared local produce.

Return to Hotel Continental for a restful night before tomorrow’s journey takes you far beyond the Arctic Circle. The contrast between Norway’s sophisticated capital and the dramatic landscapes that await creates the perfect beginning to this remarkable expedition through Norway, Finland and Swedish Lapland.

Day 2

Into the Spectacular Lofoten Islands

After breakfast, your private transfer returns you to Oslo Airport for your onward flight to one of the most spectacular destinations in the Arctic. As you travel north, the landscape transforms from forests and rolling countryside into jagged mountains rising directly from the Norwegian Sea.

On arrival in the Lofoten Islands, you’ll make your way to Hattvika Lodge, an exceptional boutique retreat surrounded by towering peaks and sheltered waters. Originally a traditional fishing village, the restored fishermen’s cabins now combine authentic heritage with elegant Scandinavian interiors, creating one of Norway’s most distinctive places to stay.

After checking in, take time to absorb the extraordinary surroundings. Snow covered mountains frame peaceful harbours where colourful fishing boats continue traditions that have shaped life here for centuries. The crisp Arctic air and changing winter light create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Europe.

Later this evening you’ll enjoy a memorable three course dinner at Fangst Restaurant, where local ingredients take centre stage. Fresh seafood, seasonal produce and modern Nordic cooking combine to showcase the flavours of northern Norway while panoramic sea views complete the experience.

Should conditions be favourable after dinner, step outside and look towards the night sky. Far away from major towns, the Lofoten Islands offer wonderfully dark conditions for watching the Northern Lights. Green ribbons of light can often appear above the surrounding mountains, providing an unforgettable introduction to your Arctic journey.

Spend the night at Hattvika Lodge, resting beside the Norwegian Sea before tomorrow’s private exploration of one of Scandinavia’s most iconic landscapes.

Day 3

Exploring the Natural Wonders of Lofoten

Today is devoted to discovering the extraordinary beauty of the Lofoten archipelago on a private sightseeing experience with an expert local guide. This remarkable collection of islands is renowned for dramatic mountain peaks, sheltered fjords, white sandy beaches and traditional fishing communities, each connected by some of Norway’s most scenic roads.

Throughout the day your guide will tailor the journey to maximise both the conditions and your interests, taking you to spectacular viewpoints, hidden beaches and picturesque villages where brightly painted fishermen’s cabins stand against a backdrop of snow covered mountains.

Visit charming settlements such as Reine, Hamnøy and Nusfjord, each offering its own unique character and fascinating insight into life above the Arctic Circle. Along the way you’ll learn about the region’s fishing heritage, Arctic wildlife and the remarkable resilience of the communities who have lived here for generations.

Photographers will find endless opportunities to capture dramatic scenery, from frozen lakes and rugged coastlines to reflections in calm harbours and towering granite peaks. Even during winter, the soft Arctic light creates extraordinary colours throughout the day.

There will also be time to stop at local cafés and artisan shops, where handcrafted products and regional delicacies offer a deeper connection to the culture of northern Norway.

Returning to Hattvika Lodge later this afternoon, you can relax before another peaceful Arctic evening. If the skies remain clear, keep watch for another opportunity to witness the Northern Lights dancing above the surrounding mountains, providing a fitting conclusion to an unforgettable day exploring one of the world’s most beautiful winter landscapes.

Day 4

From the Lofoten Islands to Arctic Tromsø

After breakfast, it’s time to leave the dramatic peaks of the Lofoten Islands behind as you continue your journey deeper into the Arctic. Following your transfer to the airport, you’ll board your flight to Tromsø, often referred to as the Gateway to the Arctic. Surrounded by mountains, fjords and islands, this vibrant city has long been a starting point for legendary polar expeditions and remains one of the finest places in the world to experience the Northern Lights.

On arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to The Dock 69°39 by Scandic, a stylish waterfront hotel overlooking Tromsø Harbour. With its contemporary Scandinavian interiors and excellent location, the hotel provides an ideal base from which to explore the city over the coming days.

The afternoon is yours to discover Tromsø at your own pace. Wander through the lively streets lined with independent boutiques, cafés and galleries, or visit the striking Arctic Cathedral with its distinctive triangular architecture inspired by the surrounding mountains. You may wish to take the Fjellheisen cable car for panoramic views across the city, where snow covered peaks stretch towards the horizon and the surrounding fjords shimmer beneath the winter light.

As darkness falls, Tromsø takes on an entirely different atmosphere. The streets glow beneath soft lighting while restaurants serve fresh Arctic seafood, locally sourced ingredients and traditional Nordic cuisine. Despite its position well above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø feels welcoming and cosmopolitan, balancing a rich polar heritage with modern Scandinavian culture.

This evening is free to relax after your journey or simply step outside and look skyward. Even from the city, the Aurora can occasionally appear overhead, offering a reminder of the magical experiences still to come. Return to The Dock 69°39 for a comfortable night’s sleep before tomorrow’s unforgettable wildlife adventure.

Day 5

Private Whale Safari in the Arctic Fjords

Today offers one of the true highlights of your Arctic journey as you set out on an exclusive private whale safari through the spectacular fjords surrounding Tromsø. During the winter months, vast shoals of herring attract humpback whales, orcas and other marine wildlife into these nutrient rich waters, creating one of Europe’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles.

Accompanied by an experienced local skipper and guide, you’ll board your private vessel and cruise quietly through the dramatic Arctic landscape. Towering mountains rise directly from the sea while snow covered peaks reflect in the calm waters, creating breathtaking scenery in every direction. The peaceful pace of the journey allows time to appreciate the stillness of the Arctic environment as your guide shares fascinating insights into the region’s marine ecosystem and wildlife.

As you search the fjords, keep watch for the unmistakable sight of whales surfacing nearby. Witnessing a humpback breach or an orca gliding effortlessly through the water is an unforgettable experience and one that very few destinations in the world can offer in such spectacular surroundings. White tailed sea eagles are also frequently seen soaring overhead, while seals and porpoises occasionally make an appearance.

Returning to Tromsø during the afternoon, the remainder of your day is free to relax or continue exploring the city. Visit the Polar Museum to learn about Norway’s famous explorers, browse local design shops or simply enjoy a warming drink overlooking the harbour.

If conditions are favourable this evening, Tromsø once again offers an excellent opportunity to witness the Northern Lights. Whether viewed from the waterfront or beyond the city lights, the Aurora often provides a magical conclusion to an already extraordinary day spent amongst some of the Arctic’s most magnificent wildlife.

Day 6

Into Finnish Lapland and Sámi Traditions

Leaving Norway behind, today’s journey takes you east into Finnish Lapland, where vast forests, frozen lakes and rich Indigenous culture create a completely different Arctic landscape. Travelling through spectacular wilderness, you’ll arrive in the peaceful village of Inari, home to Finland’s Sámi community and regarded as the cultural heart of the country’s far north.

Your accommodation for the next stage of your journey is Wilderness Hotel Inari, beautifully positioned beside the frozen shores of Lake Inari. Designed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, the hotel combines warm Nordic interiors with exceptional comfort, creating the perfect retreat after a day spent outdoors. Large windows frame the surrounding wilderness, while the quiet location provides excellent conditions for watching the Northern Lights should the skies remain clear.

This afternoon you’ll enjoy an authentic Sámi and reindeer experience, offering a fascinating introduction to the traditions and way of life that have shaped this region for thousands of years. Meet the reindeer that remain central to Sámi culture and learn about the seasonal rhythms of life in the Arctic, traditional livelihoods and the deep connection between the people and the natural world.

Listening to stories passed down through generations provides a unique perspective on the landscapes you’ve travelled through, revealing how survival, respect for nature and cultural heritage continue to define life in Lapland today.

Following your experience, return to Wilderness Hotel Inari where you can unwind before dinner. Perhaps spend time beside the fire or simply admire the peaceful surroundings as darkness settles across the frozen lake. With very little light pollution, this is another exceptional location to watch for the Northern Lights, bringing another magical evening to your journey through the Nordic Arctic.

Day 7

Across the Border into Swedish Lapland

After breakfast, you leave Finland and continue your journey into Swedish Lapland, where dense pine forests, frozen rivers and peaceful wilderness create an atmosphere of complete tranquillity. Crossing the border, the scenery changes once again, revealing a quieter side of the Arctic where nature sets the pace and each season is celebrated through local traditions.

On arrival at Arctic Retreat, you’ll discover one of Swedish Lapland’s most exclusive wilderness escapes. Hidden within the forest beside the Råne River, this intimate collection of handcrafted timber cabins has been carefully designed to provide privacy, comfort and an authentic connection with the surrounding landscape. Large windows invite the outdoors inside, allowing you to enjoy views across the snow covered forest from the warmth of your cabin.

After settling in, you’ll have time to explore the retreat and experience its peaceful surroundings. Wander through the forest trails, pause beside the frozen river or simply relax in your cabin with a warming drink while watching the changing Arctic light outside.

This afternoon, you’ll be introduced to one of Sweden’s favourite traditions, fika. More than simply enjoying coffee and cake, fika is an important part of everyday life, encouraging people to slow down, spend time together and appreciate the moment. Enjoy freshly baked pastries and locally roasted coffee while learning about this much loved Scandinavian custom.

As evening approaches, dinner showcases seasonal ingredients sourced from the forests, rivers and nearby farms of Swedish Lapland. Every dish reflects the flavours of the region, prepared with care and presented in an elegant yet relaxed setting.

Later, step outside into the silence of the surrounding forest. With almost no artificial light, Arctic Retreat offers exceptional conditions for viewing the Northern Lights. Should the Aurora appear above the trees, you’ll enjoy one of the most peaceful and memorable viewing locations anywhere in the Nordic Arctic before retiring for the night in your luxury cabin.

Day 8

Forest Adventures and Nordic Wellness

Today offers the opportunity to experience Swedish Lapland in a way that few visitors ever do. Surrounded by ancient forests and guided by local experts, you’ll discover the slower rhythms of Arctic life through a collection of authentic experiences that celebrate the region’s natural environment.

Your morning begins with a guided forest skiing excursion. Unlike downhill skiing, this traditional form of Nordic travel allows you to glide quietly through snow covered woodland, following routes that have connected communities for generations. The peaceful surroundings offer opportunities to spot wildlife tracks while your guide explains how people have adapted to life in these northern landscapes over centuries.

Returning to Arctic Retreat, you’ll enjoy time to relax before taking part in a Nordic herbal workshop. Learn how locally gathered herbs, berries and plants have been used for generations in traditional remedies, cooking and wellness rituals. The experience provides a fascinating insight into the close relationship between local people and the surrounding forest.

This afternoon is dedicated to relaxation. Enjoy the retreat’s traditional wood fired sauna before stepping outside to cool off in the crisp Arctic air. Afterwards, sink into the outdoor hot tub overlooking the snowy forest, allowing the warmth to soothe tired muscles while you absorb the remarkable stillness of your surroundings.

Dinner once again highlights the exceptional produce of northern Sweden, with carefully prepared seasonal dishes inspired by local traditions.

As darkness settles across the forest, the retreat becomes wonderfully quiet. With no distractions and exceptionally dark skies, this is another outstanding opportunity to search for the Northern Lights. Watching ribbons of green light move silently above the pine trees while surrounded by complete wilderness is an experience that perfectly captures the magic of Swedish Lapland.

Day 9

Husky Sledding Through the Arctic Wilderness

One of the most exhilarating experiences of your journey awaits today as you head into the forests surrounding Arctic Retreat for an unforgettable husky sledding adventure.

After meeting your experienced guides and enthusiastic team of dogs, you’ll receive an introduction to the basics of mushing before setting off across frozen rivers and winding woodland trails. The eager huskies quickly settle into their rhythm, pulling the sled effortlessly through the pristine winter landscape while the only sounds are the runners gliding across the snow and the occasional excited bark from the dogs.

Travelling by husky sled offers a unique perspective on the Arctic. Routes inaccessible by road reveal untouched forests, frozen lakes and peaceful clearings where nature remains undisturbed. Along the way, your guide will explain the important role sled dogs continue to play in Arctic life and the deep bond shared between the mushers and their canine companions.

Returning to the retreat, you’ll have time to warm up with hot drinks and homemade treats while reflecting on the morning’s adventure. The afternoon is free to enjoy however you choose. Perhaps take a gentle walk through the surrounding woodland, curl up beside the fire with a good book or return to the sauna and hot tub for another deeply relaxing wellness experience.

This evening, your farewell dinner celebrates the very best of Swedish Lapland’s seasonal cuisine, providing a fitting conclusion to your stay at Arctic Retreat. The intimate atmosphere and warm hospitality create a memorable final evening in the wilderness.

Before heading to bed, take one last look towards the night sky. If conditions are favourable, the Northern Lights may make one final appearance, providing a spectacular farewell to your time in the Arctic wilderness and bringing this remarkable journey through Norway, Finland and Swedish Lapland towards its conclusion.

Day 10

Farewell to the Arctic

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast surrounded by the peaceful forests of Swedish Lapland before it is time to bid farewell to Arctic Retreat. After days spent exploring dramatic coastlines, experiencing Indigenous cultures, encountering extraordinary wildlife and immersing yourself in the tranquillity of the Nordic wilderness, your Arctic adventure comes to an end.

Your private transfer will take you to the airport for your onward journey home, leaving with unforgettable memories of three remarkable countries. From the colourful fishing villages of the Lofoten Islands and the spectacular fjords of northern Norway to the cultural heart of Finnish Lapland and the quiet forests of Swedish Lapland, every destination has revealed a different side of life in the High North.

Along the way, you’ve travelled with expert local guides, stayed in exceptional boutique hotels and luxury wilderness lodges, enjoyed authentic regional cuisine and experienced traditions that have shaped Arctic communities for generations. Whether it was watching whales in the Norwegian fjords, meeting reindeer alongside Sámi hosts, gliding through silent forests on skis or husky sled, or relaxing beneath the stars in a traditional sauna and hot tub, each experience has offered a genuine connection with the landscapes and people of the Nordic Arctic.

Should the Northern Lights have appeared during your journey, they will undoubtedly remain among your most treasured memories. Even beyond the Aurora, the stillness, beauty and sense of space found across Norway, Finland and Sweden leave a lasting impression long after you’ve returned home.
