Depending on the time of year you visit, you can enjoy a selection of the following activities. Most are available as private tours or experiences — so it feels like you have the Arctic all to yourself.
- Sample Swedish cuisine on a romantic aurora wilderness dinner, out on a frozen lake with the starlit sky and the aurora borealis above.

- Enjoy the exhilarating experience of ice climbing on a frozen waterfall. Or get creative at an ice sculpting class.
- Go snowshoeing or cross country-skiing, right from the door of your lodge.
- Embark on snowmobile adventures. Venture above the treeline and onto the Arctic tundra. Or head up to the top of Mount Ednamvarri for breathtaking views of the aurora borealis.
- Go on a Northern Lights photography course. Get all the kit and expert guidance you need to take beautiful photographs of the Northern Lights as they dance across the sky.
- Warm up after winter activities in your private hot tub under the stars. Savour Swedish sauna culture. Or treat yourself to a relaxing Swedish massage.
- Visit the famous Icehotel for a cocktail at the Ice Bar. Or — for a truly mesmerising experience — stay in the night in a spectacular Ice Suite.
- Experience Sámi hospitality. Gather around the tipi fire to eat a traditional meal while learning about Sámi history and culture.

When is the best time to book a holiday in Sweden?
That all depends on what you want to see and do while you’re there.
The northern lights are visible in Swedish Lapland any time from September to March. And autumn and winter seasons have their own unique appeal.
In September and October, autumn colours blaze across the landscape. From November to March, snow and ice turn northern Sweden into a winter wonderland.
We can plan a northern lights holiday in Sweden to coincide with Christmas or New Year celebrations. It’s also possible to book a family aurora trip during the February half-term holidays.
Just bear in mind that — if you’re travelling with a large group and want exclusive use of a Northern Lights lodge — you need to book around a year in advance.

We had a fantastic 4 nights that included glaciers, waterfalls, geysers, the aurora borealis and more! Lovely hotels, especially Hotel Ranga. We filled every moment and felt thoroughly invigorated on our return.
1. Gourmet Cabins was excellent and Johan was a friendly and knowledgeable host. The food, cabins, hot tub and sauna were brilliant.
2. Dog sledge was a fantastic experience and we were given the opportunity to drive our own sledge
3. Snow Mobile – really got off the beaten track and into the spectacular mountains
4. Saw the Northern Lights twice in two days. There is no description that can really do them justice
We had a wonderful time! The food at the lodge was amazing and there were some great vegetarian dishes. I had the best beetroot I’ve ever had (beetroot tartare).
Everyone was really friendly and all the guides were good fun and very knowledgeable.
A special thanks to William and Petri who were really friendly and really added a personal touch to our trip. The activities were really well planned and we especially enjoyed the trip with the huskies. The area we were in is stunning and the lodge was very nice. We would definitely recommend this to friends and family.
Brilliant short break. Hotel Ranga was lovely, excellent food. Managed to see the Northern Lights as well! Iceland on the whole was quite expensive but a lovely place to visit, the people were very friendly.
Dear Abigail, We have safely returned from Iceland and we wanted to say a huge and sincere thank you for all the plans that you put into place to make this one of the most memorable holidays we have ever had. It was simply beautiful each and every day. The cabin was idyllic and so cosy and warm. The tour guides were so knowledgeable and friendly and the scenery was breathtaking. All the arrangements worked so well and we will remember the trip for a long time to come.
Thank you once again.
I appreciate the fast response to my inquiries regarding my trip. It would take decision making faster on my part, and plan my itinerary and activities being offered by the company accordingly.
We have never before experienced such friendly and simultaneously professional service! Alex’s communication was super prompt, questions encouraged and welcomed and attended to with great care and detail. Everything was well organised and available on beautifully designed and very useful platforms. Our destination (Mattarahkka Northern Lights Lodge) was fabulous on so many different levels – exquisite views, friendly interactions from everyone on the team, great food, exciting activities, perfectly situated to see the northern lights (seen twice in 4 nights’ stay), a great fire place, and not to mention our fantastic guide Fabio. Their provision of winter kit (hats, down jacket, snow trousers, leather gloves and boots) offered everything we needed to be comfortable outside. All we needed to have packed really were base layers, a few layers of clothing and woollen socks. Defintely somewhere we would highly recommend and return to when possible!
My wife and I had an awesome and memorable trip to Iceland thanks to Alex at Aurora Nights. Alex tailored the itinerary to exactly what we wanted to see and chose excellent hotels to stay at. We totally enjoyed the city of Reykjavik and the many beautiful waterfalls. He went above and beyond to not only recommend sights to see around the Golden Circle and Ring Road, but also mapped it out so we were prepared to drive through the country during unpredictable weather and road conditions. And we were especially pleased to see the Northern Lights on our visit. Alex was very flexible to make changes to our plans and choosing the wonderful Sky Lagoon to replace our tickets for the Blue Lagoon due to the closure from the volcanic activity. We highly recommend Alex and Aurora Nights.
