Holidays to Abisko in Sweden: FAQs
Why is Abisko such a good place to see the Northern Lights?
Abisko is one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights. It enjoys long, dark, winter nights and low levels of light pollution.
Located 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, you can see the northern lights in Abisko even when solar activity isn’t at its strongest.
The area also has more cloud-free nights than other areas of Swedish Lapland. That’s because the mountains surrounding Abisko disperse clouds coming from the Atlantic Ocean.
This creates a “blue hole” — a patch of clear, cloudless sky that sits above Abisko village, Lake Torneträsk and Abisko National Park most nights of the year.

Can you guarantee that I’ll see the Northern Lights in Abisko?
Unfortunately not. The northern lights are a natural phenomenon so — as much as we’d like to — we can’t make a guarantee.
But, rest assured, Abisko’s climate and location make it an excellent northern lights destination. On our holidays to Abisko, we also do everything we can to maximise your chances of seeing the aurora in all its glory.
You’ll stay in remote, dark sky locations and get aurora wake-up calls. You’ll also embark on exciting northern lights adventures with our expert aurora guides.
When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Abisko?
You can see the Northern Lights in Abisko from October to March.
Travel to Abisko In October, and you’ll experience Abisko National Park ablaze with golden, autumn colours. From November onwards, Abisko is a snowy wonderland, perfect for winter activities.
The winter months also bring more hours of darkness. In fact, the sun sets in Abisko at the start of December and doesn’t rise again until the middle of January. Plan a trip to Abisko in winter and those long, dark nights increase your chances of seeing the aurora.

This was a bucket list trip. The company are specialists and I’ve valued their advice. Everything from the when to go for the best opportunity to see the lights and equipment needed and provided. Our activities included, the Ice Hotel, night photo shoot, snowmobiling, guided walk and the sky station meal. All excellent and well run by knowledgeable experts and guides. The Abisko Lodge is warm comfortable and relaxing the food is excellent and the staff welcoming, friendly and very helpful. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for a different and exciting experience.
Dear Abigail, We have safely returned from Iceland and we wanted to say a huge and sincere thank you for all the plans that you put into place to make this one of the most memorable holidays we have ever had. It was simply beautiful each and every day. The cabin was idyllic and so cosy and warm. The tour guides were so knowledgeable and friendly and the scenery was breathtaking. All the arrangements worked so well and we will remember the trip for a long time to come.
Thank you once again.
My wife and I had an awesome and memorable trip to Iceland thanks to Alex at Aurora Nights. Alex tailored the itinerary to exactly what we wanted to see and chose excellent hotels to stay at. We totally enjoyed the city of Reykjavik and the many beautiful waterfalls. He went above and beyond to not only recommend sights to see around the Golden Circle and Ring Road, but also mapped it out so we were prepared to drive through the country during unpredictable weather and road conditions. And we were especially pleased to see the Northern Lights on our visit. Alex was very flexible to make changes to our plans and choosing the wonderful Sky Lagoon to replace our tickets for the Blue Lagoon due to the closure from the volcanic activity. We highly recommend Alex and Aurora Nights.
We have never before experienced such friendly and simultaneously professional service! Alex’s communication was super prompt, questions encouraged and welcomed and attended to with great care and detail. Everything was well organised and available on beautifully designed and very useful platforms. Our destination (Mattarahkka Northern Lights Lodge) was fabulous on so many different levels – exquisite views, friendly interactions from everyone on the team, great food, exciting activities, perfectly situated to see the northern lights (seen twice in 4 nights’ stay), a great fire place, and not to mention our fantastic guide Fabio. Their provision of winter kit (hats, down jacket, snow trousers, leather gloves and boots) offered everything we needed to be comfortable outside. All we needed to have packed really were base layers, a few layers of clothing and woollen socks. Defintely somewhere we would highly recommend and return to when possible!
A well organised trip which was tailored to our specific requests. The arrangements all ran perfectly and any queries prior to the holiday were handled very quickly and professionally. The standard of accommodation and organised tours was very high. I would use this company again and recommend them.
A fantastic short break which fulfilled all expectations. Well organised with a polished delivery, we could not have asked for more. The accommodation was perfect for us and the guides knowledgeable and helpful. Every day was packed with adventure, each lasting longer than scheduled but we were never rushed; the guides took pride in showing and explaining their beautiful country. We would certainly use Weekend a la carte again and recommend them to others.
We had a fantastic 4 nights that included glaciers, waterfalls, geysers, the aurora borealis and more! Lovely hotels, especially Hotel Ranga. We filled every moment and felt thoroughly invigorated on our return.
Thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The Abisko Mountain Lodge was fantastic, every member of staff was friendly welcoming and charming. Accommodation, upgraded room was excellent. The food in the lodge definitely deserves the high reviews. Good breakfast, great hime made lunch soups and extremely tasty evening dinners.
The included trips were great. The only let down was the camera night, couldn’t see the lights no one fault, but we were walked through thigh high snow to be left on a frozen lake for the duration of the trip. There was no warning of the difficult walk and we had a 91 year old with us and I have hip problems! That said the guide was great, as were the ones on the skimobile and husky rides. We went up to the sky station in a snow storm with high winds, added to the experience!
Would go back in a heart beat.
We had little communication with Weekend a la carte, no need as all communications were clear and contained all the information we needed. Very informative emails
Would use again if going back
