Is Norway a good place to see the northern lights?
Norway is an excellent place to see the northern lights. Northern Norway lies within the aurora zone. It has low levels of light pollution and enjoys long dark nights. This makes it an ideal location for aurora hunting.
Our northern lights tours in Norway take in the best aurora destinations. You can fly to Tromsø. Then, travel to dark sky destinations like Svalbard (just 1500 km from the North Pole), Senja Island, the Lofoten Islands, Vesterålen and the Lyngen Alps.
What can I see and do on northern lights holidays to Norway?
There’s so much to see and do on northern lights tours in Norway. Depending on your tour and the time of year you visit, you can choose from the following:
- Embark on a whale-watching tour around the fjords. See magnificent orca, humpback and sperm whales in their natural habitat.
- Try your hand at mushing on a husky sled expedition to a glittering ice cave. Or experience the thrill of riding a snowmobile over Norway’s icy tundra.
- Delight in the quiet of the Arctic wilderness on a snowshoe excursion. And indulge in complete relaxation back at the hotel spa, sauna or hot tub.
- Travel to the Lofoten Islands, with their spectacular scenery and colourful wooden houses. Explore the vibrant arts scene and taste Arctic delicacies.
- Chase the aurora borealis in breath-taking settings. On an overnight cruise through the fjords, against a backdrop of the Lyngen Alps or reflected in the sea at Senja.
- Journey into space at the Andoya Space Centre! Take part in an interactive visitor experience to learn more about the science of the aurora borealis.
- Get to know Norwegian culture. Visit the Art Museum in Tromsø. Sample the wares at Mack Brewery. And take the cable car up Storsteinen Mountain for spectacular views of Tromsø and the surrounding fjords.

When is the best time to visit Norway?
The Norway northern lights season lasts from September to March. This is when we get long, dark nights in the Arctic Circle.
March gives you the best chance of clear skies. But the winter months have longer, darker nights. In a far-north location like Svalbard, you don’t get any daylight during the depths of winter.
We can plan a trip to coincide with the whale-watching season in Norway. Or to ensure you see the Lofoten Islands in their golden autumn colours.
If you want winter activities, like husky sledding and snowmobiling, we can make sure that Norway is blanketed in snow for your visit.

Our hotels and lodges offer aurora wake-up calls. We plan exciting night time aurora adventures, where you travel to remote locations with very little light pollution.

Thank you for arranging a fabulous holiday, we had a really enjoyable time and would love to return in the future. Hotel Ranga is a lovely place to stay and the owner greeted guests in the restaurant, which was an unexpected welcoming touch. We didn’t see the Northern Lights due to the weather and the trip to the Eyjafjallajokull glacier and volcano was substituted by an excursion to Thorsmork, also due to the weather, which we thoroughly enjoyed; the brochure description doesn’t do it justice. We found Iceland and the people there really charismatic. Although the wind and snow cut short the amount of travelling we could do, we still covered a reasonable amount of what we wanted to see and our appetites are whetted for a return, perhaps in Spring or Summer. We found a couple of great places to eat near the Hotel in Reykjavik. Messin does tasty fish dishes and the Icelandic Street Food restaurant was excellent, offering simple but hearty soups with refills included in the price – great value.
Overall very good. Staff excellent and helpful. Accomodation basic but was what we expected. Tour guides very good (nature walks, snow mobiles, dog sleighs). Sky station disappointing as we never got to go up due to the weather and this seem to be a recurring feature. The alternative walk at night and meal was a let down as a result.Overall would recommend to others.
We had a wonderful time! The food at the lodge was amazing and there were some great vegetarian dishes. I had the best beetroot I’ve ever had (beetroot tartare).
Everyone was really friendly and all the guides were good fun and very knowledgeable.
A special thanks to William and Petri who were really friendly and really added a personal touch to our trip. The activities were really well planned and we especially enjoyed the trip with the huskies. The area we were in is stunning and the lodge was very nice. We would definitely recommend this to friends and family.
Superb holiday to Iceland, well organised, advice regarding trips informative and far exceeded our expectations (Glaciers and ice Cave) run by South Coast. Hotel Ranga is a lovely hotel, perfect to see Northern Lights (which we did see on our 3rd night), very comfortable, food excellent, staff helpful and informative. SouthCoast Adventure tour company were excellent, guides knowledgeable, and clearly very experienced.
We had a fantastic 4 nights that included glaciers, waterfalls, geysers, the aurora borealis and more! Lovely hotels, especially Hotel Ranga. We filled every moment and felt thoroughly invigorated on our return.
This vacation has without without doubt, has been the best experience we have ever had. The organisation from the minute we landed in Kiruna until we departed at the close of our trip was second to none. The transition between hotels was always seamless and punctual. Everywhere we stayed was beautifully clean and the meals were top quality. Every driver was polite, entertaining and very knowledgeable, furnishing us with invaluable information about Sweden and the activities in which we were to participate. The snowmobiling was wonderful giving access via our guide, to stunning panoramic views of the mountain whilst viewing reindeer in their natural habitat.
Our guide demonstrated how to use the snowmobile safely he was pleasant and informative. When visiting the reindeer on the Sami reservation; we found the brother and sister team who hosted lovely. Again they were so hospitable and helpful and feeding the reindeer up close was a wonderful experience.
They provided additional activities for us to try and we were treated to a traditional Sami lunch in their hut. They provided us with invaluable information appertaining to their culture and caring for their reindeer. The reindeer were in superb condition and happy in their environment. Similarly, when out with the dog sleds the experience was magical. Two hours of beautiful scenery, and frozen lakes, finishing with a one-on-one experience massaging the dogs. Magic! We were so impressed with the care that was placed upon ensuring the dogs were comfortable, well-nourished and so loved by their owners/handlers.
Now to the photographic experience. A large group of us were treated to a demonstration of how to operate some serious camera equipment with tripod. Each of us was loaned the camera and given assistance setting up the camera on a frozen lake in preparation for the appearance of the Northern Lights. We were taken to this lake on large wooden sleighs pulled by a snowmobile. We cannot speak too highly of the two young men who accompanied us on this experience. They could not do enough for us. They were there to offer assistance with our cameras throughout the two-plus hours we were on this beautiful lake.
They advised where to position the camera and when the Lights appeared, what a performance. We had a two-hour display of this most breathtaking phenomenon. We were so fortunate to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime occurrence for which we are so grateful. We will never forget this memorable holiday and cannot thank you and everyone who assisted in making a lifetime dream come true. Karen & Andrew Adamson
We had the most fabulous time and everything worked like clockwork. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and extremely competent. The food was excellent and the experiences, especially Husky Homes, were brilliant. We saw the aurora lights at the mountain top in Abisko where the photography tour will be an enduring memory of a wonderful time. I would very much recommend Weekend a la Carte as a proficient tour operator.
My wife and I had an awesome and memorable trip to Iceland thanks to Alex at Aurora Nights. Alex tailored the itinerary to exactly what we wanted to see and chose excellent hotels to stay at. We totally enjoyed the city of Reykjavik and the many beautiful waterfalls. He went above and beyond to not only recommend sights to see around the Golden Circle and Ring Road, but also mapped it out so we were prepared to drive through the country during unpredictable weather and road conditions. And we were especially pleased to see the Northern Lights on our visit. Alex was very flexible to make changes to our plans and choosing the wonderful Sky Lagoon to replace our tickets for the Blue Lagoon due to the closure from the volcanic activity. We highly recommend Alex and Aurora Nights.
