Frequently asked questions
Is Finland a good place to see the northern lights?
Absolutely. Finland is an excellent place to see the northern lights.
Finnish Lapland (in the north of Finland) lies within the aurora zone. This is an area where the northern lights appear with the greatest frequency and intensity. In fact, in Finnish Lapland, the northern lights appear on more than 200 nights a year.
On Aurora Nights tours, we travel beyond the bright lights of Rovaniemi to the Finnish wilderness. To places like Ivalo, Inari, Nellim, Muotka and the village of Kilpisjärvi.
These places have very low levels of light pollution. So you have the best possible chance of seeing the northern lights in all their glory.
What can you see and do on northern lights holidays to Finland?
There’s so much to see and do on a Finland northern lights trip. Depending on the time of year you visit, we can arrange any of the following activities:
- Make like a Finn with traditional activities like ice fishing and husky sledding. Or up the adrenaline on snowmobile and snow tubing adventures.
- Enjoy the restful calm of the Arctic landscape. Go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing through snowy forests and across ice-covered lakes.
- Chase the aurora with your expert northern lights guide. Travel to remote regions, gather around the campfire and watch nature’s awe-inspiring light show.
- Travel to Rauna Wildlife Park to see Arctic animals like polar bears, brown bears, wolves, lynxes and wolverines.
- Take a reindeer sleigh ride through a magical forest. Look out for elves as you travel to a private meeting with Santa Claus.
- Take time to unwind with exclusive sauna and spa experiences. Or just hop into your own private hot tub as the northern lights dance above.
- Get off the beaten track and escape into nature. Let our guides lead you through snowy wilderness, sharing tales of the local culture and the natural world.
What accommodation options are there on a Finland northern lights tour?
On a trip to see the northern lights in Finland, there are some incredible accommodation options.
Boutique hotels out in the wilderness. Cosy log cabins with roaring log fires. Glass igloos with panoramic views of the night sky. Private villas and eco-friendly resorts. Rooms with their own saunas and hot tubs.
There’s accommodation suited to every type of traveller. From couples to families to groups of friends travelling together. So — once we know your requirements — we can find and book the perfect stay.
Can you guarantee that I’ll see the northern lights on a Finland aurora trip?
Unfortunately not. The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and run to their own schedule. The weather also makes a difference. It’s harder to see the northern lights on cloudy nights.
However — on an Aurora Nights holiday — we maximise your chances of seeing the northern lights.
We book you into hotels in the Finnish wilderness, where light pollution is at its lowest. You get aurora wake up calls to alert you when the northern lights make an appearance.
You also travel on night time northern lights adventures with experienced aurora borealis guides. With the help of aurora and weather forecasts — plus their years of expertise — they take you to beautiful locations where the northern lights are most likely to appear.
When is the best time to visit Finland?
The aurora season in Finland runs from the start of September to the end of March. During this time, there are more hours of darkness than in late spring and summer. This increases your chances of seeing the northern lights.
If you’d like to see the country blanketed in snow, then a winter break to Finland, from December onwards, is the best option.

Dear Abigail, We have safely returned from Iceland and we wanted to say a huge and sincere thank you for all the plans that you put into place to make this one of the most memorable holidays we have ever had. It was simply beautiful each and every day. The cabin was idyllic and so cosy and warm. The tour guides were so knowledgeable and friendly and the scenery was breathtaking. All the arrangements worked so well and we will remember the trip for a long time to come.
Thank you once again.
This vacation has without without doubt, has been the best experience we have ever had. The organisation from the minute we landed in Kiruna until we departed at the close of our trip was second to none. The transition between hotels was always seamless and punctual. Everywhere we stayed was beautifully clean and the meals were top quality. Every driver was polite, entertaining and very knowledgeable, furnishing us with invaluable information about Sweden and the activities in which we were to participate. The snowmobiling was wonderful giving access via our guide, to stunning panoramic views of the mountain whilst viewing reindeer in their natural habitat.
Our guide demonstrated how to use the snowmobile safely he was pleasant and informative. When visiting the reindeer on the Sami reservation; we found the brother and sister team who hosted lovely. Again they were so hospitable and helpful and feeding the reindeer up close was a wonderful experience.
They provided additional activities for us to try and we were treated to a traditional Sami lunch in their hut. They provided us with invaluable information appertaining to their culture and caring for their reindeer. The reindeer were in superb condition and happy in their environment. Similarly, when out with the dog sleds the experience was magical. Two hours of beautiful scenery, and frozen lakes, finishing with a one-on-one experience massaging the dogs. Magic! We were so impressed with the care that was placed upon ensuring the dogs were comfortable, well-nourished and so loved by their owners/handlers.
Now to the photographic experience. A large group of us were treated to a demonstration of how to operate some serious camera equipment with tripod. Each of us was loaned the camera and given assistance setting up the camera on a frozen lake in preparation for the appearance of the Northern Lights. We were taken to this lake on large wooden sleighs pulled by a snowmobile. We cannot speak too highly of the two young men who accompanied us on this experience. They could not do enough for us. They were there to offer assistance with our cameras throughout the two-plus hours we were on this beautiful lake.
They advised where to position the camera and when the Lights appeared, what a performance. We had a two-hour display of this most breathtaking phenomenon. We were so fortunate to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime occurrence for which we are so grateful. We will never forget this memorable holiday and cannot thank you and everyone who assisted in making a lifetime dream come true. Karen & Andrew Adamson
Hotel Ranga was perfect, with amazing food. It is in the middle of nowhere, very quiet and with the weather being bad there wasn’t the possibility of leaving the hotel in the evening so mightn’t suit all for that reason. Super Jeep tour we thoroughly enjoyed with 2 lovely guides.
Hotel Borg was in the perfect location. For us, one night in Reykjavik would be ample.
Blue Lagoon was a wonderful experience only heightened by the appearance of the northern lights on our walk home from dinner. All in all we had the best holiday and we plan to return to Iceland hopefully sooner rather than later.
Thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The Abisko Mountain Lodge was fantastic, every member of staff was friendly welcoming and charming. Accommodation, upgraded room was excellent. The food in the lodge definitely deserves the high reviews. Good breakfast, great hime made lunch soups and extremely tasty evening dinners.
The included trips were great. The only let down was the camera night, couldn’t see the lights no one fault, but we were walked through thigh high snow to be left on a frozen lake for the duration of the trip. There was no warning of the difficult walk and we had a 91 year old with us and I have hip problems! That said the guide was great, as were the ones on the skimobile and husky rides. We went up to the sky station in a snow storm with high winds, added to the experience!
Would go back in a heart beat.
We had little communication with Weekend a la carte, no need as all communications were clear and contained all the information we needed. Very informative emails
Would use again if going back
I found Aurora nights just through a google search. Alex, my Aurora expert was so helpful in helping us have the perfect trip to the Arctic. He had personal experience of the activities and places to visit there that would make our trip really special. This followed through to a particularly unforgettable and wonderful holiday. Everything was sent to us with care and attention before hand and we were supported by the team throughout our holiday. All of the recomendations were wonderful especially the Ice Hotel, dog sledding and of course the beautiful Northern Lights. The transportation arrived on time every time. I would highly recomend this company for their experience in the field and their due care and attention to you as a customer. It was faultless and we had the most awesome time.
A fantastic short break which fulfilled all expectations. Well organised with a polished delivery, we could not have asked for more. The accommodation was perfect for us and the guides knowledgeable and helpful. Every day was packed with adventure, each lasting longer than scheduled but we were never rushed; the guides took pride in showing and explaining their beautiful country. We would certainly use Weekend a la carte again and recommend them to others.
We booked with Aurora for a short winter break to celebrate an event. We wanted something special and that’s what we got. Clear information was backed up with straightforward booking detail, and we had a super, holiday with no complications.
The holiday exceeded my expectations and I will use Aurora in the future. Thank you!
We have never before experienced such friendly and simultaneously professional service! Alex’s communication was super prompt, questions encouraged and welcomed and attended to with great care and detail. Everything was well organised and available on beautifully designed and very useful platforms. Our destination (Mattarahkka Northern Lights Lodge) was fabulous on so many different levels – exquisite views, friendly interactions from everyone on the team, great food, exciting activities, perfectly situated to see the northern lights (seen twice in 4 nights’ stay), a great fire place, and not to mention our fantastic guide Fabio. Their provision of winter kit (hats, down jacket, snow trousers, leather gloves and boots) offered everything we needed to be comfortable outside. All we needed to have packed really were base layers, a few layers of clothing and woollen socks. Defintely somewhere we would highly recommend and return to when possible!
