Northern lights tour reviews
We booked with Aurora for a short winter break to celebrate an event. We wanted something special and that’s what we got. Clear information was backed up with straightforward booking detail, and we had a super, holiday with no complications.
The holiday exceeded my expectations and I will use Aurora in the future. Thank you!
My wife and I had an awesome and memorable trip to Iceland thanks to Alex at Aurora Nights. Alex tailored the itinerary to exactly what we wanted to see and chose excellent hotels to stay at. We totally enjoyed the city of Reykjavik and the many beautiful waterfalls. He went above and beyond to not only recommend sights to see around the Golden Circle and Ring Road, but also mapped it out so we were prepared to drive through the country during unpredictable weather and road conditions. And we were especially pleased to see the Northern Lights on our visit. Alex was very flexible to make changes to our plans and choosing the wonderful Sky Lagoon to replace our tickets for the Blue Lagoon due to the closure from the volcanic activity. We highly recommend Alex and Aurora Nights.
An amazing trip and excellent service provided by all involved. Great value for money too. Food was excellent. Accommodation was wonderful and the trips booked were outstanding. An amazing trip
Cannot thank this company enough. Our break to Iceland was the second time we’ve let them organise everything for us and once again they didn’t disappoint. Everything ran seamlessly and the organised tours were wonderful. This company knows what they are doing. If you want to experience the geysers, the volcano, the northern lights and all the other exciting things that Iceland has to offer then this is the company to use.
Northern lights family holidays: FAQs
Can’t see an answer to your question here? Our team of travel experts is always happy to help.
What’s the best time of year for a northern lights family holiday?
The best time to see the northern lights is any time from September to early April. During this time, Arctic skies are dark enough for aurora viewing.
However, if the family is keen for adventures in the snow, you should travel from December to the end of March, when a good covering of snow is guaranteed.
Can you see the northern lights during the school holidays?
Absolutely. In the UK, lots of families travel to see the northern lights during the Christmas holidays or at February half term. The Aurora Nights team can help you choose the best destinations and itineraries for peak-season travel.
How likely are we to see the northern lights?
Sightings can never be guaranteed. But you have an excellent chance of seeing the aurora borealis on your family northern lights holiday.
On an Aurora Nights trip, we take you to the very best northern lights destinations in Europe — places out in the Arctic wilderness with very little light pollution.
You also embark on exciting northern lights excursions with an expert aurora guide. You travel in search of clear skies where the northern lights are shining brightest.
Do you have to stay up late to see the northern lights?
You maximise your chances of seeing the northern lights if you stay up past bedtime. But the northern lights can appear at any time, as long as the sky is dark.
That means, during winter months — when there are only a few hours of daylight in the Arctic — there’s lots of opportunity for aurora viewing (even if you don’t want to keep the kids up too late).
Where will we stay?
On an Aurora Nights holiday, you can choose from family rooms in boutique hotels, log cabins, glass igloos and exclusive-use lodges — with full-board, half-board, self-catering and private chef options.
What can I do on a family northern lights holiday?
On northern lights holidays with children, you can go snowmobiling, husky sledding and ice fishing. You can visit Santa and his elves, take a reindeer sleigh ride through frozen landscapes or embark on a peaceful snowshoe excursion through the countryside.
Other popular activities include whale watching, tobogganing, snowman-building, listening to Sámi storytelling in a traditional teepee, visiting the Polar Museum and — of course — chasing the northern lights.
How cold will it be on our family winter holiday?
Temperatures vary by destination. Sweden and Finland are often significantly colder than Iceland and Norway. Temperatures can drop as low as -17 ˚C in northern Sweden in winter months.
To keep you warm and comfortable on your Arctic adventure, we provide Arctic outerwear in a wide range of child and adult sizes. We also recommend you bring hand warmers and lots of thermal layers.
If you’re travelling with younger children, we tend to plan short outdoor excursions, with breaks in between. That way, everyone has plenty of time to warm up before heading back out into the snow.
