Seeing the northern lights at Christmas and New Year: what to expect
Celebrate Christmas — or ring in the New Year — in the Arctic Circle.
Travel to the far north in December or early January, and you experience the very heart of aurora season. Nights are long and skies are dark, which means a good possibility of breathtaking northern lights displays.
Beyond the aurora, the festive season brings its own magic. Twinkling lights, the smell of spiced treats in the air, and a slower, more indulgent pace of life.
Over Christmas and New Year, you can expect generous festive meals, fireworks, cosy accommodation dressed for festivities — and an exciting selection of outdoor activities and northern lights excursions.
Northern lights tour reviews
We booked with Aurora for a short winter break to celebrate an event. We wanted something special and that’s what we got. Clear information was backed up with straightforward booking detail, and we had a super, holiday with no complications.
The holiday exceeded my expectations and I will use Aurora in the future. Thank you!
My wife and I had an awesome and memorable trip to Iceland thanks to Alex at Aurora Nights. Alex tailored the itinerary to exactly what we wanted to see and chose excellent hotels to stay at. We totally enjoyed the city of Reykjavik and the many beautiful waterfalls. He went above and beyond to not only recommend sights to see around the Golden Circle and Ring Road, but also mapped it out so we were prepared to drive through the country during unpredictable weather and road conditions. And we were especially pleased to see the Northern Lights on our visit. Alex was very flexible to make changes to our plans and choosing the wonderful Sky Lagoon to replace our tickets for the Blue Lagoon due to the closure from the volcanic activity. We highly recommend Alex and Aurora Nights.
An amazing trip and excellent service provided by all involved. Great value for money too. Food was excellent. Accommodation was wonderful and the trips booked were outstanding. An amazing trip
Cannot thank this company enough. Our break to Iceland was the second time we’ve let them organise everything for us and once again they didn’t disappoint. Everything ran seamlessly and the organised tours were wonderful. This company knows what they are doing. If you want to experience the geysers, the volcano, the northern lights and all the other exciting things that Iceland has to offer then this is the company to use.
Northern lights Christmas holidays: FAQs
Can’t see an answer to your question here? Our team of travel experts is always happy to help.
What can I do on a Christmas northern lights holiday?
Whether you’re dreaming of fun in the snow or an escape from the hustle and bustle of the festive season, there’s something for everyone on a Christmas northern lights holiday.
Visit Santa and his elves. Explore the Arctic wilderness by snowmobile or husky sled. Take a reindeer sleigh ride, go ice fishing or cross-country skiing.
Seeking rest and relaxation? How about a trip to Iceland’s thermal spas? Or a luxurious fjord cruise in Norway? Or a snowshoe excursion through hushed Arctic landscapes.
When you book with Aurora Nights, we create a personalised itinerary, so you can experience the Arctic (and celebrate the season) your way.
Will there be a Christmas tree at my accommodation?
Yes, accommodation is decorated for Christmas. Even if you’re staying in self-catered accommodation, we make sure that your home-from-home has a Christmas tree and lots of festive spirit.
Can I visit the Christmas markets?
Yes, you can visit the Christmas markets as part of a Christmas or New Year northern lights holiday. This usually involves a stopover in a city before travelling north to the Arctic. You’ll find incredible Christmas markets in Reykjavik, Stockholm, Helsinki and Oslo.
How do they celebrate New Year’s Eve in the Arctic?
In Arctic cities, there are often firework displays on New Year’s Eve. You can watch fireworks over the fjord in Tromsø, and see live music and a torchlight parade along city streets. In Reykjavik, locals light huge bonfires and set off fireworks long into the night.
In the more remote regions of the Arctic — like Abisko — celebrations are more sedate. You can welcome in the New Year with a luxurious meal at your accommodation, accompanied by some fizz and (hopefully) the dancing colours of the aurora borealis.
When is the best time to see the northern lights?
You have the best chance of seeing the northern lights between September and early April, when Arctic nights are long and dark.
December and early January offer particularly long hours of darkness. In Tromsø, the sun doesn’t rise at all from the end of November to mid-January. That means maximum hours for aurora hunting.
Will I definitely see the northern lights at Christmas or New Year?
We can’t guarantee that you’ll see the northern lights on your trip. But we can promise to take you to some of the best aurora locations in Europe — places in or near the Arctic Circle, with very little light pollution.
You also travel with our expert aurora guides on northern lights excursions. Our guides use their knowledge of solar and weather forecasts to seek out the clearest skies and the brightest aurora displays.
